The 40th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta began today. I decided to watch from one of my favorite spots - the pedestrian bridge over the Rio Grande along Alameda. You never really know which way the balloons will travel, but today they seemed to be flying northwest with quite a few over Corrales. So I managed to get a few pictures with my cell phone.
This is my favorite time of year here. The weather is cool, crisp and sunny. I never go to the balloon fiesta park for the mass ascension anymore unless I have visitors. I have been here for 25 years and have been several times and it's a real treat! But it's much more fun to go with someone, especially if it's their first time. No one is visiting this year, so this is how I enjoyed it. Lots of people are out, walking, biking, pulled off on the side of the road taking it all in. Balloon chase crews are all over the place. I saw the Smokey the Bear chase crew on an old red firetruck with the top cut off, full of people! I wasn't able to get a picture of it, but maybe I'll have another chance.
