Featured Print of the Day - Cactus Roses

Cactus Roses
I started painting cacti when I was a student at UNC. I started painting them because I was so excited about my anticipated move to the Southwest. Twenty-six years later, I am still in New Mexico and still love painting these, as well as other colorful flowers and plants. For some reason, the cactus has become somewhat symbolic for me. It's beautiful here, but it hasn't been easy and I have had to find ways to thrive, sort of like the cactus in the desert.

Featured Print of the Day - My Agave

My Agave
Several years ago, I had a painting entitled Agave that was stolen from me by a frame shop owner. I wrote about the experience here in my blog. I always liked that painting, so I decided to paint a similar one. This one is not for sale because I would like to keep it for myself. This is one of my favorite plants to paint and my favorite color combination.

Desert Beauty
When I moved from North Carolina to New Mexico in 1986, I had my house plants in the front of my VW and my dog, Babe, in the back seat. One of the plants was a prickly pear cactus, which we eventually planted outside, where it thrived in the New Mexico sun. It has been a model for several of my cactus sketches and paintings.

Featured Print of the Day - Along the Rio Grande

Along the Rio Grande
One of my favorite places is along the Rio Grande off Alameda in Albuquerque. I especially like it in the winter because these grasses that grow along the water's edge turn a nice rust color. The air coming off the water is very crisp and cold. However, it's also beautiful during October, when the cottonwoods are yellow and the balloons are out for Balloon Fiesta. People enjoy biking, horseback riding, picnicing, and taking pictures in this area any time of the year.

A Spring to Remember
Driving along a back road, I saw this strong adobe wall with this grand entrance. The sky was a brilliant blue and the Purple Sage and Spanish Broom were in full bloom everywhere. So, I couldn't resist adding those into the painting, reminding me of what a beautiful spring it was.

Artists, Which Ready-Made Canvas Do You Use?

My favorite canvas company, Signature Canvas, is going out of business. I've used their canvases for a couple of years and really like them. They are a bit expensive, but so well made and I really loved painting on them.
I've stretched my own canvases in the past, but I'm no longer interested in doing that - mainly because of lack of time and space. So, I would love some feedback from other painters as to what brand of canvas you all use.
I'm interested in gallery-wrapped canvas because I like to paint the edges. I do happen to like Artisan's Professional Stretched Canvas, which I can buy right here in Albuquerque. However, I would still like to know about other brands and what your opinions are of them.
Thanks for the feedback!

Today, I painted the sky of The Old Church. I want a clear blue cloudless sky, so I've used Pthalo Blue (green shade) mixed with Titanium White along the horizon. I blended this into Ultramarine Blue (red shade) mixed with Titanium White for the sky above. I'll probably go over this again at some point to create an even smoother transition from the lighter horizon to a darker sky overhead.

I'm cringing as I do this because I really dislike having people see my paintings before they are finished. But I really enjoy looking at other artist's works in progress. So, I'm going to be bold and share this one here on my blog from the underpainting stage it is in now until it is finished.
This is a 24"h x 20"w stretched canvas. First, I drew a grid in pencil on the canvas to help me with the placement of my sketch. I've done a very rough underpainting of the values using a wash of Liquitex Transparent Burnt Umber, Titanium White and a little bit of Mars Black. I don't usually start out this way, but I liked how this worked out, so this will probably be my method from now on.
It's very messy at this point, but an art professor once told me to start out loose and I can always tighten it up as I go. Actually, this is the most fun part of the painting, until it gets to the final stages. There's a lot of problem solving in between.
This is actually 1 of 4 paintings that I have in various stages of progress. Hopefully, I'll have a finished one to post soon!

Gallery Wrap Canvas

"Desert Beauty"
Most of my acrylic paintings are painted on 1.5" deep gallery wrap canvas. I thought I would post this just to inform anyone who may not know what that is. It is becoming a very popular way to display art because it eliminates the need to purchase custom framing. I love nice picture frames as much as anyone, but I think whether to frame or not should be up to the collector. However, I do think that the gallery wrap canvas does not always work for all types of paintings. Some paintings do look much better in a traditional frame.

The nice thing about this is even though the painting can be displayed without a frame, it can also be custom framed like any other painting, if the collector prefers.
Desert Beauty is available for purchase here on my website.

San Felipe de Neri is a beautiful old church located in Old Town, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The original church was built in 1706 and was located across the street. It crumbled due to heavy rains in 1792. It was rebuilt in 1793 in it's current location and is the oldest church in Albuquerque.

Print of the Day - "One of Many"
I used to paint in oils and this is one of the last oil paintings I did before changing to acrylics. There were large zinnias growing in our back yard, so I focused in on this big red one.

20" x 24"
Print of the Day - "La Puerta Verde"
"The Green Door" is the last of my little trio of paintings of Southwestern style doorways. I titled these in Spanish simply because the words are more beautiful. Pink autumn sage looks so pretty in full bloom and is one of my favorite shrubs.

Signature Canvas

Sometime last year, I was searching for high quality canvas for my paintings and I was very happy to find Signature Canvas. They are based in Kansas City, KS and produce premium-quality archival canvas. I was also happy to discover that as a Fine Art Studio Online member, that I receive a discount!
I am currently working on my third Signature canvas and I truly love it! I use the 1.5" gallery wrap spline-fastened cotton canvas, but they also offer many other types of canvas to choose from. I just received another order of canvases and was very pleased to see that they are now including a special label on the back of each canvas that includes the artist's name, artist statement and website. I am so happy that I have chosen this as my "signature canvas" and I am also thankful for my Fine Art Studio Online artist discount!

Print of the Day - "La Iglesia de San Ysidro"
This church is in Corrales, New Mexico and is a favorite subject of mine. It was built around 1868, but is no longer used for services. It is one of many of the beautiful old adobe churches in this state.

Print of the Day - "Hollyhocks"
"Hollyhocks" is part of a small series of paintings inspired by the San Felipe de Neri church. Hollyhocks thrive here in the New Mexico sunshine. I love the bright and varied colors against the earth tones of adobe walls.

Print of the Day - "Dogwood"
One thing I miss about North Carolina are the dogwood trees that bloom in pink and white around Easter. It has been said that the dogwood tree was used to construct the cross Jesus died on. The bloom which is also symbolic, has four petals in the shape of a cross, with a notch in the edge of each petal, resembling a nail mark. The center of each flower symbolizes the crown of thorns worn on Christ's head.

Each year in October, the sky is filled with the beauty of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. In this painting, I combined my love of cactus with colorful hot air balloons against a backdrop of the Sandia Mountains.

Print of the Day - "A Breath of Spring"
A couple of days ago, I started featuring a "Print of the Day" on my Facebook Fan Page. I would like to add this to my blog, but would like to keep it consistent with my fan page. So, I need to catch up by adding the first three prints here on the same day.
The first one is entitled "A Breath of Spring". I painted this back in the spring of 2009. It was inspired by a pot of white daisies I spotted basking in the sun, in the village of Corrales.
Fine art prints of this painting are available on The Untapped Source in the following sizes:
12" x 16"
18" x 24"
I would recommend having this printed on watercolor paper or canvas, but matte, glossy and luster papers are also available. Comment on or Share this Article →

The American Southwest Group on Imagekind

View From the Mesa by Gayle Faucette Wisbon
Imagekind has a great community of artists who create and sell their art as prints and greeting cards. Some artists join groups to showcase their work according to a particular theme or subject matter. I created the American Southwest group and am really happy to see it featured on Imagekind today.
This group was created to display the beauty and diversity of the American Southwest. It is comprised of 65 artists and includes over 400 beautiful images from the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas and Utah.
My Art on Other Sites
In addition to my wonderful art site here on Fine Art Studio Online, I use other sites to sell reproductions and/or to draw traffic here to my main site. Here are a few and why I have selected them.
Imagekind has become my favorite site for fine art prints. I have ordered a few and the quality is excellent. They sell museum quality prints and buyers can select from eight different acid-free papers and two types of canvas. Custom framing is also available with over 160 frames and over 140 mats to choose from. Greeting cards are available, as well. My gallery can be viewed here.
Artists interested in having their work on Imagekind can select from four types of accounts. There is a very active artist community with a forum and groups. Imagekind helps promote their artists by displaying eight new images each day on the home page, as well as two artist profiles. They also highlight certain artists in their blog. However, like most print on demand sites, it is up to the artist to build their own customer base. Artists are free to set their own royalties.
Artist Rising was created by Art.com to give artists a place to show their work, as well as give them an opportunity to have their work on the Art.com and Allposters sites. Artists can submit images for poster prints or fine art prints. The setup process takes a bit longer than other sites. First, the image is uploaded and description is added. Then it has to be approved, which takes a couple of days. After the image has been approved, the artist can set up either poster prints or fine art prints. The poster print setup also takes a couple of days. I have only created poster prints, but from what I understand, the fine art print setup involves a fee and mailing of images on cd. Artists are paid a 15% royalty on sales.
Unfortunately, Art.com does not assist the artists very much with advertising this site, although they do have a small link to it on their site. The great thing is that they will periodically migrate images from Artist Rising to the Art.com and Allposters sites and that is where most of the artists make their sales. Their decision on which images are chosen is based on sales on Artist Rising and/or decorating trends. Artist Rising also includes an artist forum, but we really have to help each other out, because there is very little feedback from the Artist Rising team.
Redbubble is a very fun and active online artist community. They have lots of forums, groups and activities going on there. The Redbubble team is constantly working to make this a great place for artists and buyers and they keep us well-informed. Artists can create an artist profile and a Bubblesite, all for free! They offer a variety of prints, as well as greeting cards, calenders and t-shirts. The greeting cards are beautiful! Artists are also free to set their own royalties. Writers can submit their work, as well. I have read some beautiful poetry there.
Zazzle is also a fun and active place for artists to sell all kinds of products. My Zazzle gallery includes fine art prints, greeting cards, postcards and postage stamps. However, there are a multitude of other products to create such as t-shirts, shoes, skateboards, magnets, mugs, calenders, etc. It also includes a very active artist forum and the ability to comment and favorite other artist's shops. Zazzle galleries are also free and artists can set their own royalties for each product.
Well, there are lots of others sites out there, but these are the ones I have been with the longest and am the most familiar with.
